2018 Spring Board Meeting Highlights
Our State Teams worked hard at the March 17 Spring Board Meeting, and some would like to share the ways they plan to keep supporting Chapters during April and May. Send them a note of thanks if you can find time. Janet Suzanne Foster, Music, Art, Humanities Education Team Leader To join the Leadership Conference talent show, please send the Chapter name, a contact person and number, and the number of members involved with the performance. In addition, the Omega State Arts Gallery should be up and running within the month. Watch for an email! Carol Drollinger, Scholarships and Awards Team Member Star Chapter Award forms are at dkgcolorado.weebly.com, Carol will send you a hard copy if you prefer. Our Chapters do an amazing job in so many ways. Let's be proud of our successes and be recognized with Star Chapter Awards! Jessie Shackelford, Communications and Publicity Team Leader The State Team would like to help Chapters with these tasks. Send your requests for PR or Communications needs such as flyer, videos, etc. to Jessie and create with the Team! Kathy Flynn, CTAUN Representative The 19th Annual CTAUN Conference at the UN is Friday, April 6th. Theme is "Stepping Up to Protect the World's Children." More details at dkg.org Beth Barzdukas, Membership Team Leader Please remember to send her Form 6 (Death of a Member) within two weeks of the member's passing. This form stops correspondence from International to the grieving family. Dr. MaryAnn Roldan, U.S. Forum Team Leader Members must continue being informed concerning legislative issues impacting education, teachers, and students in Colorado. Study how PERA will solve the funding problem. Will members contribute more and retirees receive less? How will Senate Bill 18-200 (SB 18-200) solve the funding problem of PERA? (PERA On the Issues) Be alert to legislation impacting funding for public education. Will public school monies be diverted to Charter Schools? Secure a copy of the 2017 Colorado Directory of National and State Officials (League of Women Voters). Once well-informed, write a letter to your elected officials citing the impact of their choice on you. Visit the U. S. Forum Website: http://www.usforumdkg.org/ Linda Pitts, Personal and Professional Pride Team Member SUGGESTIONS FOR HONORING DKG MEMBERS AT CHAPTER MEETINGS Business/Team Reports/Announcements 1. Kathy Flynn got over 60 orders for the Anniversary Booklet! Chapters and individuals can still order so send your requests to her today. 2. Beth Barzdukas needs our Form 6 Death of a Member reports within two weeks of the member's passing. International needs regular updates to avoid sending info to family members who are already grieving. Family members don't have the form; only Chapters can help here. 3. Lilly Vigil needs a copy of all new member initation forms for State records. When we send the forms to International, please also send her a copy to keep our records correct at State. 4. Dr. Barbara Whinery and Dr. Mary Ann Roldan shared legislative updates on educational issues. They provided handouts and websites where we can research more information and inspired us to join in conversations about solutions to the challenges we face. (http://www.securepera.org/) (http://leg.colorado.gov/bills/SB18-200) 5. Mary Lauk told her personal story of inspiration and invited us to be aware--even a simple bird can be inspiring! 5. Applications for Omega State Leadership Conference are in Omega Peaks and at dkgcolorado.weebly.com and International Convention applications are at dkg.org. Ya'll come! 6. We had four visitors who want to join Chapters. Thank you so much for making them feel welcome and inviting them to Chapter visits. Let me know when they plan to come to your Chapter, and I'll try to come too if I'm not at another Chapter visit. Program Theme: The Art of Education 1. I mentioned four groups that you can google, research, and join to improve education. Check them out and see which ones you'd like to be a part of. They are making great impact on student success and have invited Omega State to help them. If only one member from each Chapter joined one group, we'd change the lives of hundreds of students! A. ACE Scholarships B. Minds of Matter C. Colorado I Have a Dream D. Hippy 2. Fumnanya Camera from CDE spoke to us about her state-wide efforts in re-engaging students to improve state graduation rates. She will be sharing more with us at a later meeting. 3. Cynthia Mousel gave us a global look at education by sharing her personal work with students in Guatemala. She will be sharing more later on how you can get involved. 4. Artist Elijah Farrales inspired us to think in new ways with his cup-stacking experience. We can use his videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imO4CZb_YO0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rSUA0x1Vcc Here are the questions I asked him. He'll be glad to write out his answers if you want to use the discussion, and he's planning to share the new sculpture he makes with the cups we donated. He was mostly delighted that some of us took the cups to use in Chapters and classes. He inspired us; we inspired him. 5. First year 3rd grade teacher Kait Rase invited us to think our our own first years of as teachers and then shared her own inspired teaching of moon phases with Oreos and contractions with surgical gloves used to "operate" on words and suture them back together with apostrophes. She told us we can "promote the personal and professional growth" of young teachers by reassuring them they are doing a good job--because they are! |
