Here is hoping that everyone had a joyful and restful holiday break. The massive snowstorm that hit my area Christmas Eve Day and continued through the following Friday left us with 4 + feet of snow. Great for the moisture, the skiing and the tourism but hard on the back when one shovels for four days in a row. Shoveling is great exercise, by the way, and I am still waiting to get on my cross country skis….hard to ski in a snowstorm, right?
I have a “food for thought” question for you, and I hope that you all think about this question as you move forward with electing or re-electing chapter officers, or as you are asked to be a chapter officer: What is our individual and collective responsibility to the organization we know and love? Is DKG a priority or is it just “something we’ve always done” or “something we do when we don’t have any other priorities or problems to think about?
I have learned so much more about the people in this international organization; I fondly remember our 2021 Convention where we as a group of just under 70 came together—masks and all—to learn, to share and to celebrate diversity, newly-elected officers, and the importance of our stories. Granted, many of us are still limited to zoom meetings; however, we can still share our stories and our humanity with one another. Phone calls to chapter members or friends that we haven’t seen in a while are usually hour-long conversations, but they are energizing and beautiful connections.
I will be updating my chapter visitation schedule and posting it on the website. Plans for the Summer Leadership Conference are shaping up, and the schedule of events will be made available as soon as it is finalized. We are still planning an in-person Conference; however, we are also looking into streaming parts of the Conference as well. I have been in contact with our site coordinator as well as the campus caterer, and I assure you that we will have a wonderful experience at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. The initial legwork by Penny Propst helped us get started, and I hope to see new chapter leaders the first week of June. Our International guest is Trish Woodley, DKG International Membership Director. She is a delight, and will provide an International update, a keynote speech and, well, she might be a great resource for a couple of the sessions. I look forward to introducing her to you all.
Take care of yourselves. I look forward to seeing some of you soon in chapter meetings, at the Spring Board meeting, or at the monthly Chapter President zoom meetings.
