Celebrating DKG
As we approach the end of 2020, there is much to be celebrated. Colorado Delta Kappa Gamma is still together and we are still evolving. We have learned some new things as we have persisted in supporting and promoting good educational practices in our communities. As you reminisce on the past year and prepare for the next, I hope you reflect on who we are and why we are DKG.
While the events of this past year challenged us with grave situations, they also provided opportunities for growth and learning. A lot of our members, including me, had not even heard of zoom or google meetings, much less participated in one. And now, chapters can meet regularly to conduct business, enjoy speakers, and even produce Christmas variety shows with great finesse.
It has been my privilege to watch, encourage, and grow along with you this year. With help from our webmaster, Heidi, our technological colleagues and family members, we have established lifelines for our members. I want to share some of the triumphs and great ideas that have come out of the confusion and chaos of the abrupt closure of our normal routines last spring.
At the state level, we were able to safely conduct two statewide meetings face-to-face. The State Leadership Conference was postponed until August and was held in Montrose. The Ed Law and Policy Team and the US Forum Team presented its extensive research on State Health and Education Policies resulting from and in answer to the COVID situation and concluded that schools were in a mess.
The outcome became my focus and request for your chapters to support our working members who are dealing with added stress and concern for themselves and for their students on a daily basis. Chapters stepped up in these and many other ways –
Notes of appreciation and support
Gift cards and money donations for supplies
Gift baskets
Cutting out manipulatives in classroom quantities
Thank you for your enthusiastic, generous, and CONTINUING support of our classroom heroes!
In October Colorado DKG met in Greeley for its Fall State Board Meeting. The membership team celebrated five members of our organization and profession who have been DKG members for 50 or 60 years. The state teams had time to discuss and plan. One of our speakers was Dave Young, Colorado State Treasurer, who explained some of the ballot issues.
Some of the outcomes of the board meeting include-
Streamlining and digitizing scholarship applications.
Registration for the Summer Convention will be subsidized with Life-Long Learning scholarships.
Colorado DKG Honor Roll applications have been revised and will be available early 2021. A great way to recognize your chapter heroes!
Forward moving ever –
The deadline for the next issue of the Peaks and Plains is early February. Have you submitted an article about your chapter or Team? Please tell what you are doing for your working teachers and local schools. Your project success may be just the impetus that another chapter needs to get started.
Please remember to make chapter donations for Schools for Africa, World Fellowships, and the Emergency Fund. One of our Colorado members benefited from the Fund this summer after being evacuated due to the wildfires.
The requirements for STAR chapter have been updated to include virtual meetings. Check out the new point list and be sure to apply for your chapter’s recognition.
Continue to look for new members but also contact former members who might be ready to be reinstated.
Assuming that we will be able to meet in person, the Spring State Board meeting will be March 20, 2021 in Colorado Springs at the Franciscan Center. Look for more information in the Peaks and Plains and on the website soon.
Now that all parts of our Colorado By-Laws and Standing Rules have been updated and approved, please clean out all previous versions. It will help prevent confusion later on. Put together a team and clean out your chapter archives! Get your Spring Cleaning done now so you can enjoy Spring out of doors.
There are some security measures now in place on our State website to protect our personal contact information. To access the password contact your chapter president, Heidi Ragsdale [email protected] or Leila Koenig [email protected]
Alpha Chi in Eagle and Alpha Sigma in Leadville and your state officers invite you to the Colorado DKG State Convention on June 15, 16, and 17 in Eagle Colorado. Please mark your calendars and prepare to come see your DKG sisters in person in this beautiful Colorado location.
I hope you have made use of the workshops and videos of speakers from the International Convention for your chapter meetings. They will be available for a few more months.
Deadlines for State and International Scholarships are coming up Feb. 1st. Encourage your members to apply for these funds for advanced degrees and workshops.
Busy teachers may need an extra nudge to get this done, but it is worthwhile.
I have met with chapter presidents by zoom in September and November. I am planning another meeting in January. Please watch for details and plan to attend.
