Christmas and Philadelphia & DKG
What do Philadelphia and Christmas and Delta Kappa Gamma have in common? It is easy to link DKG and Christmas. Most every DKG Chapter observes some special traditions during November and December.
This celebration may involve a feast or special meal. Members may honor a favorite school or meaningful charity with gifts of time, with books, or with various useful items. Other chapters enjoy music or a play. Some lucky groups combine several or all of these and even share them with sister chapters.
Next summer, DKG International members will gather in Philadelphia to commemorate our group’s history and consider the direction of our organization’s future. Philadelphia is a beautiful city full of historic sites. Visiting Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell immediately reminds one of the period around 1775-78 when the entire future of our country was still being debated. A mere 20 miles away from downtown is Valley Forge where the Continental Army with George Washington endured a very grim Christmas, in hopes of surviving to defeat unfair taxes and restrictions of liberty.
In this historic Philadelphia setting DKG members will come together to teach and learn, while we share and evaluate ideas. Our own rich DKG tradition of promoting personal & professional growth of women educators will feel right at home in the birthplace of personal and professional freedom.
So getting to the point – What do Christmas and DKG and Philadelphia and you have to do with each other? It is only 6 months until July 7th when DKG will convene in Philadelphia. With that date in mind it is definitely time to start planning what you would need to do to be able to attend. So, while you are decorating for the holidays, it is time to consider the possibilities. While you are wrapping gifts, it is time to think about setting aside some travel money. While your chapter observes its holiday traditions it may be time to apply for a life-long learning scholarship to help pay your expenses.
If you have not had the opportunity to visit Philadelphia, why not plan to go with your Colorado DKG sisters? You might even want to extend your trip with the ‘Go Ahead’ Tour to New York following the event. Tour details are on the International Website.
There could very well be additional amendments to the DKG Constitution under consideration next summer. The implications of changing our rules have lasting consequences as we found out following the convention in Austin, Texas. As your Colorado President I am asking you to be present to consider these ideas that require careful deliberation.
My Christmas wish for our Colorado classrooms is to have peaceful and enriched learning environments with creative and outstanding teachers. And I wish all of you members a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Season of Celebrations.
